Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin which is an essential nutrient to human beings as well as to other species. It is also referred as Ascorbic Acid. Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant that plays a vital role in boosting the immune system. Vitamin C is most often used as an additive for coloring and preservation.

Vitamin C is found in vegetables and fruits (citrus fruits). Fruits like lemon and orange are rich in Vitamin C. Other fruits include strawberries, apple, grapes, red guava, custard apple, kiwi, melons etc. Vegetables like cauliflower, tomatoes, spinach, potatoes, broccoli etc. There are also Vitamin C supplements available in pharmacy but its always recommended to intake the natural sources.

Vitamin C is necessary for production of collagen - a fibrous protein in connective tissues found in muscles. It is well known for fighting against germs and healing of wounds. It is important for maintenance of healthy teeth, bones and gums. It also helps in keeping our skin smoother. The recommended intake of Vitamin C for adults is between 75 and 90 milligrams per day.

Vitamin C Deficiency causes scurvy - a disease characterized by anemia, weakness, spongy and bleeding gums etc. Over-dosage of Vitamin C may result in formation of stones in kidney, nausea, gastritis, nausea etc.
