Controlling Obesity

Though not a serious medical problem, Obesity is considered as one of the major health problems among many. Obesity is caused due to eating disorders (intake of high-calorie foods), genetic factors, lack of exercise or physical activity and medical conditions such as hypothyroidism. United States has the highest rate of obesity in the developed world.

Obesity may lead to diseases such as diabetes, osteo-arthritis, hypertension, sleep apnea and cardio-vascular disease etc. Obese person may also suffer from emotional feelings as many make fun of being obese, especially in childhood.

Obesity may be diagnosed visually or thru calculating BMI (Body Mass Index). There are many weight loss programs to reduce body weight and obesity. The programs are designed to reduce the fat levels in body by encouraging exercise and following a cautious dietary habit.

Medications like orlistat, bupropion or sibutramine are also prescribed by Doctors to reduce obesity. But these may have side-effects. In extreme cases a weight loss surgery such as “gastric bypass” may be advised depending upon the body condition.
