Baldness facts and treatment

Baldness is a condition of partial or complete loss of hair. In medical terms it is referred as “Alopecia” There are various types of baldness, but the most common is androgenic alopecia which occurs in males. Men are more exposed to baldness than women.

Baldness may cause psychological effects such as anxiety, frustration, depression etc. For some it may also result in identical change. Some use cap or wig to hide it from others. Baldness occurs mainly in middle age. The hair loss starts from the front head or top of the head and gradually spreads to the other areas. I have noticed few people who completely shave off their head to avoid mockery of baldness. Others dress their hair in such a way that the bald area is not visible.

Fall of Hair can be prevented by following the below:

  1. Avoid applying hair creams or gels deeper into the hair follicles.
  2. Avoid using Hair Dryers too close to hair or very often.
  3. After swimming in a pool, wash your hair with a shampoo which will remove the chlorine. Chlorine may damage your hair or scalp.
  4. Avoid over-exposure to hot sun.

Baldness occurs due to genetic factors, diseases, hormone changes, malnutrition etc. There are various ways of treating baldness. Medications like Minoxidil, Anti-androgens, Dutasteride, Finasteride etc. are helpful in treating baldness and may have side-effects. The recent advancement in the medical world - Hair Transplantation, Hair Multiplication and Laser therapies are also helpful in treating baldness.
